“Proud to wear the uniform.”
BEN SCALLAN: Taoiseach Micheál Martin wants a Citizens’ Assembly on Irish neutrality – despite previously saying that Citizens’ Assemblies are often just mouthpieces for “the loudest lobby group of the day” and not reflective of public opinion.
This isn’t a simple matter, at least not morally.
Pointless and unwarranted.
“Personally, I’m not sure I care if a French frigate is practicing its anti-torpedo manoeuvres 70 miles off the coast of Bantry Bay, in the way I’d care about the Russians doing the same.”
The vastly more likely alliance for Ireland to join is, of course, an EU common defence.
With EU treaty reform on the horizon, and moving quickly, the pressure on Ireland to, at the very least, join an EU common defence mechanism will soon be overwhelming.
No more neutrality.
