Having been wildly liberal on immigration, going so far as to describe the referendum on citizenship in 2004 as a ‘racist referendum’ in An Phoblacht, Sinn Féin is now telling voters with a straight face that it is not in favour of open borders.
Of course, that referendum ended up being supported by 80% of the electorate. Apparently Sinn Féin’s warnings that the proposal – that citizenship did not immediately apply to those born in the country – would “inflame bigotry and poison the national atmosphere”, fell on deaf ears.
