Looking at the activism that regularly goes on within Ireland’s multi-billion euro NGO sector, you’d be forgiven for thinking that NGOs and the politicians seem to have remarkably similar goals – even when the public clearly isn’t on the same page. It’s really amazing just how often the objectives of politicians and allegedly “non-governmental” organisations seem to coincide, isn’t it?
For example, at the start of 2023, polling showed that public opinion was clearly turning against the government’s liberal immigration policy, following months of sustained migration protests in areas like East Wall. According to a Sunday Independent / Ireland Thinks poll in February, a clear majority of Irish people believed that Ireland had taken in too many refugees in the past year. And reinforcing these findings the same month, a RedC poll featured on Virgin Media found that two thirds of Irish people believed the country should not take in an unlimited amount of refugees – in contrast to the government’s explicitly stated “no cap” policy.
