Kudos yet again to Independent TD Carol Nolan who has dragged information from the relevant Department in relation to the full picture around asylum applications – and what she has turned up shows the sheer scale of the ferocious mess in the system and the betrayal of the trust by successive governments.
Deputy Nolan, like other TDs, is entitled to find out this information for you, the voter, under the Parliamentary Questions system where detailed information can be requested from members of the Cabinet and written answers required. It is an invaluable tool, so beware any noises which suggest its too onerous or needs to be restricted. The diligent use of PQs has revealed information on topics from immigration to abortion which was vital in holding the government to account.
