Red Cross warn against Coronavirus scam charging elderly €100 for fake test

The Waterford City branch of the Irish Red Cross has warned against a “scamming” scheme being run in the city targeting elderly people and charging €100 for a supposed COVID-19 test.

Waterford Local Radio shared the information, drawing attention to scam.

In a Facebook post the Red Cross said:

“It has come to our attention that there are a group of individuals pretending to be us going from door to door targeting the elderly and offering test swabs for the Coronavirus charging a whopping €100.”

“Please note that we do not offer this service. Please report this to an Garda Síochana as they are scamming the vulnerable.”

“Our members when out on duty are required to wear full uniform and each member also has to carry their unique membership ID card,” the Waterford branch of the organisation explained.

The HSE has warned that elderly people are are particular risk of being seriously affected by the Coronavirus.

Locals described the scam as “despicable”.


The Irish Red Cross are a voluntary organisation who provide services to vulnerable people, including first aid and assisting emergency services.
