The Irish Government wants to get rid of the Triple Lock mechanism for overseas military deployments. And they claim that this is necessary because, according to them, the UN Security Council is uniquely paralysed and logjammed in recent years.
The Government claims that dodgy foreign regimes, like Russia and China, are just going to veto any overseas missions rather than cooperating on peacekeeping, and that this is now happening in an unprecedented way which calls for a new approach – to quote Taoiseach Micheál Martin:
