This being August and the official height of silly season, I hope readers might forgive me for opening an article on Elon Musk with a quote from one of the greatest and most successful fictional politicians of all time: Sheev Palpatine. (A man whose reign as Galactic Emperor was so successful that the Star Wars movies had to take a break for several decades between episodes three and four because, well, there were no wars).
“All who gain power”, said Palpatine, “fear to lose it”.
