A man has been arrested at Dublin Port after trying to enter the country via a ferry from Cherbourg, France, with an estimated €2.8 million worth of cocaine.
When the ferry arrived into the port on Sunday, one of the vehicles that disembarked was searched. Revenue officers then discovered 40 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the floor cavity of a trailer.
At that point a man in his 50s was arrested at the scene by Gardaí from the Dublin Metropolitan Region North Central Divisional Drugs Unit, and the drugs were seized.
Gardaí note that the €2.8 million figure is an estimate, and the exact value will be uncovered following further analysis.
The man is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at a Garda station in the Dublin Region. Under the law, he can be held for up to seven days.
The drugs seized are set to be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.
“Investigations are ongoing,” the Gardaí added.
