Irish MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has called for Germany to be “broken up again” after Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) secured what has been hailed as a “historic victory” by becoming the largest party in Thuringia and the second largest party in the state of Saxony following regional elections over the weekend.
MEP for Midlands-North-West and member of The Left Group in the European Parliament, Flanagan posted on X to say that Germany “just can’t be trusted”.
“How many times does a dog have to bite before we learn,” he asked.
"Never again" they said.

Germany should be broken up again. Just can't be trusted. How many times does a dog have to bite before we learn? https://t.co/zgQSjtT0PL
His statement came in response to a CNN Breaking News post, which said that a German “far-right” party was projected to win in regional elections “for the first time since 1945” – when Nazi Germany was defeated at the end of World War II and the Nazi party was subsequently banned.
This comes after official returns showed AfD had increased its vote share to 32.8% making it the largest party on 32 seats.
AfD candidate in Thuringia, Björn Höcke, described the development as a “historic victory”.
