I had a sort of mean text from a politically-connected friend, yesterday – a chap who has been a member of Fianna Fáil for donkey’s years. He just sent me the link to the news reports that the Irish Government intends to dispatch fully 66% of the cabinet to the United States over St. Patrick’s week with a single comment: “Operation begorrah and bejaysus is a go”.
I say mean, but the text was entirely accurate. Ireland is dispatching more members of the cabinet to the United States than at any time in recent history, because of a mounting sense of panic in Dublin that the “relationship” needs some re-setting. Our Ministers have one job: Remind the great American public and their leaders that we’re a grand little likeable island nation that warrants their friendship and their generosity.
