Tory MP stabbed repeatedly at UK constituency office

A 69 year old Conservative Party MP in the UK has been stabbed repeatedly at his constituency office in Essex, condition unknown.

Sir David Amess, who represents Southend West in Essex, was attacked earlier today when a man entered his constituency office and stabbed him multiple times at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

According to Sky News, Amess has been receiving medical attention at the scene of the attack, with an air ambulance on standby.

The MPs condition is unknown, and Essex Police indicated on Twitter that they believe they had caught the prime suspect.

“We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Rd North shortly after 12.05pm,” they tweeted.

“A man was arrested shortly after & we’re not looking for anyone else. “We’ll bring you more info when we have it.””

Labour leader Keir Starmer said the news was “Horrific and deeply shocking.”

“Thinking of David, his family and his staff,” he said.

Conservative MP Michael Fabricant tweeted that “David Amess is one of the most lovely, uncontentious, caring MPs in Parliament. This is just awful.”

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford described the event as “truly awful.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family,” he added.
