A breakdown.
“Reduction of Voting Age to Sixteen Years” Bill 2025.
Last week the Social Democrats put forward a bill to lower the voting age to 16. Ben Scallan asks if they believe 16-year-olds who commit serious crimes are responsible enough to be tried as adults.
Tánaiste “remains to be convinced.”
“Young people should not be forced to depend on older voters…”
I’m increasingly nervous about a prediction I made at the start of the year.
And it’s hardly surprising if they don’t know what a woman is, because they don’t seem at all certain on what an adult is, either.
The age of adulthood in Ireland is eighteen. Up until that point, children are, and should remain, their parent’s problem.
Who will set the agenda for 16-year-old voters?
FF, FG, the Greens, SF, PBP as well as SocDems & Labour TDs have all declared that Ireland should lower the voting age to 16 – an idea so bad it’s almost difficult to put into words. Ben Scallan tries anyway. #gript
