Actor and producer of the hit movie ‘Sound of Freedom’ Eduardo Verástegui has registered as an independent candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in Mexico.
In an interview with Mexican news outlet El Universal, the 49 year old said that although he is “not a politician” he is “tired of seeing how they rape my country”
“The majority of Mexicans are tired of the political parties that promise you and promise you that we are going to get there and rather we are going backwards. Mexico is a very rich country where there are many poor people living, it is a country where people are not allowed to fly as high as they want, it is a country that is not going well, there is more poverty, more insecurity, parents fear that their children do not return home alive, we are very bad,” he said.
Independent presidential candidates in Mexico must collect a number of signatures equivalent to 1% of the number of registered voters which must be done within 120 days of registration with current polls showing that independents collectively represent 2.1% share of the vote in the upcoming presidential election.
After registering as a candidate in the 2024 elections on the 7th of September, Verástegui posted to his Twitter/X saying, “Now is the time. After a period of discernment, I made the most important decision of my life.”
Saying that political change was needed in his native Mexico, the outspoken actor said that he dreams of a Mexico with God as the “centre” of the nation.
“I do dream of a Mexico that allows God to be the center of our nation, I do dream of the day that no migrant has to leave our country due to necessity and lack of opportunities, I do dream of a country where we recognize that we are all equal in dignity and life is respected from conception to natural death,”
Speaking about the impact of the ‘Sound of Freedom’, Verástegui expressed his hope that the film would become “a global movement which seeks to eradicate the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation,”
Adding that the film had taken eight years of work, tears, and sleepless nights to bring to audiences he said that once a person finds out what happens to children who are trafficked for sexual exploitation “you can no longer sleep,”
Verástegui has had a long and high profile career in the entertainment industry as an actor, singer, and model appearing as Jennifer Lopez’s love interest in the promotional video of her hit song ‘Ain’t it Funny’ as well as a string of film and TV productions such as ‘Bewitched’.
