He said it was his last year to present the Golden Globes so he didn’t care what he said, but Ricky Gervais opening speech and riffs throughout the Golden Globe Awards last night have gone viral.
The British actor roasted the hypocrisy of Hollywood elites on everything from sweat shops to Jeffrey Epstein.
The response of the celebrity audience was described by commentators as ‘nervous’ laughter as Gervais steamrolled through a hilarious 7 minute opening, described as a ‘flame-throwing breath of fresh air’.
Here’s Gervais slating Apple for sweat shops and Hollywood for hypocrisy:
“Apple roared into the TV game with the Morning Show, a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China.”
“So well, you say you’re woke, but the companies you work for — I mean, unbelievable: Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent. Wouldn’t you?
“So, if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right? You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank you agent, and your god and f*ck off. Okay?”
And Gervais on Epstein
“Spoiler alert, Season 2 [of Afterlife] is on the way so he obviously didn’t kill himself, did he, just like Jeffrey Epstein. Shut up, I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care. You had to make your own way here on your own plane, didn’t you?”
And later in the show, he gave this swipe at Hollywood hypocrisy on Harvey Weinstein:
“…Bird Box, a movie where people survive by acting like they don’t see a thing, so like working for Harvey Weinstein.”
