The announcement by Peter Casey yesterday that he will seek election to the European Parliament for the constituency of Ireland North West brings the total number of candidates seeking one of the five seats on offer in that third of the country to… twenty-eight.
Of these twenty-eight runners and riders, almost half – ten – might be described as coming from the “radical populist alternative” wing of Irish politics. These include Aontu party leader Peadar Toibin, Irish Freedom Party head honcho Hermann Kelly, long time writer and columnist John Waters, Covid 19 dissident doctor Gerard Waters, the National Party’s twin warring leaders Justin Barrett and James Reynolds (or, as Barrett might have it, Pinky and the Brain), Independent Ireland candidate and former RTE reporter Ciaran Mullooly, and Anthony Cahill, who is running for a new party called “The Irish people”.
