Later this week, the Dáil will return from its summer holidays. The summer is usually a good period for a Government precisely because there is little to no ongoing legislative debate or political scrutiny: The Taoiseach and Ministers are not in the Dáil answering questions from the opposition; the Government has almost unchallenged control over the political agenda; and besides, many voters simply aren’t paying that much attention, busying themselves instead with holidays and festivals and getting the kids ready to go back to school.
That changes when the politicians come back. The Government is already under pressure on both major issues and minor – we can expect Sinn Fein to make a renewed push on housing in the aftermath of the relatively successful launch of its major housing policy. We can also expect sustained political pressure over the now infamous bike shelter, and perhaps some more political bunfights over migration and hate speech and overspending in health.
