The position of consultant psychiatrist who would develop and lead a Multi-Disciplinary Team to support the delivery of gender identity services for children under 18 remains unfilled, despite the fact that the position has now been advertised twice by the HSE.
The information was provided by Fine Gael Minister of State at the Department of Health, Frank Feighan.
Minister Feighan said that the need for this role emerged following a steering committee report in 2020, where a job description for a consultant psychiatrist in child and adolescent psychiatry in CHO 7 and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) was recommended in order to replace the current system of child referrals to the Tavistock Clinic.
An adult gender identity service is provided by the national gender service in St Colmcille’s Hospital.
Minister Feighan said, “I believe the development of a service in Ireland for children and young people is essential. It is the priority of the Dept of Health and the HSE to provide a transgender healthcare service that meets the needs of children and young people.”
