Every few months, you’ll read someone, somewhere opining that it’s the current year and therefore we should stop placing marriage on some pedestal and start treating all families equally, whether they’re based on that age-old institution or not. We got the latest iteration of it this week from The Irish Times, in an article about inheritance tax for unmarried couples.
There have always been many counters to that argument, and as of March 2024, there is yet another: the defeat of a referendum which sought to redefine the family so as to include those based on “durable relationships” apart from marriage. If you’ll recall, that proposal was comprehensively rejected by almost 70% of voters across the country.
