A man in his 50s was arrested at Dublin’s Connolly Station this evening after reports were received in relation to possession of a suspected firearm.
A number of armed Gardaí were dispatched to the scene and the station was evacuated for safety reasons.
A Garda spokesperson said, “Shortly after 6:20pm this evening, Gardal received a report of a male passenger on board a commuter rail service arriving into Connolly Station, Dublin that had been observed to be in possession of a suspect firearm.”
“The individual is not alleged to have made any threat towards any passenger onboard.
An Garda Siochána swiftly deployed a large-scale response including several Garda Armed Response Units based in Dublin City including several Garda Armed Response Units based in Dublin City.”
Gardaí said one male (50s) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the StateAct, 1939.
“The suspect firearm has now been seized and a full technical examination will be conducted to determine its status under Irish legislation.” the statement said.
Gardaí said that to ensure full public safety, they evacuated Connolly Station and conducted a security sweep of both the station and the train on which this person was a passenger.
They have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat in the area and the station has now reopened.

Further to the incident An Garda Siochána says it is “aware of commentary in circulation online in relation to this incident which contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news.”
The statement concluded with an appeal An Garda Siochána to the public to “independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps.”
