An Irish man has been arrested in Peru after police seized 55kg of cocaine.
The 40-year-old was one of three men arrested by police in Peru’s capital, Lima, having been under surveillance by the country’s anti-drug unit, Dirandro.
The police are reported to have stopped a rented Nissan, in which suitcases containing cocaine were discovered.
A man from the UK was arrested, as well as a Bulgarian national.
The Peruvian authorities had placed the men under surveillance upon their arrival into the country July 21. Each man arrived separately, and were filmed greeting each other at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport.
The men were believed to have been renting an apartment in an eastern district of Lima.
Police believe the men intended to smuggle the drugs into the UK.
After appearing in court on the night of August 13, each of the men were remanded in custody.
