A Fingal County Councillor has said that swimmers at beaches around Dublin are “literally swimming in shit” and that “blue flags [are] meaningless”.
Cllr Joan Hopkins tweeted while she was able to swim twice a day at the beach in Kerry, she was unable to swim in Skerries, Portmarnock and Malahide in the past week due to pollution warnings.
“I went to Skerries on Friday for a swim, couldn’t get in due to pollution warning. Spent the weekend in Kerry swimming twice a day. Back home now wanted a swim this evening after work & can’t go to Portmarnock or Malahide. We are literally swimming in sh1t. Blue flags meaningless,” she tweeted.

She was responding to a notice from Sustainable Water Network Ireland who claimed that “1 in 7 Irish bathing waters (as reported on beaches.ie) have swim restrictions due to pollution / possible pollution.”
On Twitter, one response read: “The worst is when you get the notification that the water is safe to swim in again only days after you’ve already been swimming there 🙄.
Our lack of care is really destroying what could be a wonderful amenity. It’s not like we have access to lots of swimming pools either.”
But another respondent clapped back saying “The SocDems opposed water charges. You supported people’s right to create as much effluent as they desired.”
