It is universally accepted that the Coronavirus outbreak that has shut down the western world originated in the city of Wuhan, in China’s Hubei province. It is less universally, but still generally, accepted that the virus made its way into humans via an animal sold at one of that city’s disgusting wet markets – probably from a bat, though the virus may have originated in a Pangolin.

China’s original reaction to the virus was to try to cover it up. It also completely ignored the public health measures that are now being employed to try and prevent catastrophe in the west. Consider this astonishing fact from a New York Times report way back in January:

“On Saturday, two days before Wuhan told the world about the severity of the outbreak, it hosted a potluck banquet attended by more than 40,000 families so the city could apply for a world record for most dishes served at an event. On the day it broke the news to the world, it also announced that it was distributing 200,000 free tickets to residents for festival activities during the Lunar New Year holiday, which begins this Saturday.”

That’s not “two days before China KNEW about the severity of the outbreak”. They knew full well how severe it was, and they only revealed it to the world when the cover up failed. In the meantime, in the name of covering it up, they brought tens of thousands of people into Wuhan, risking their health and their lives.

Then there was the case of Dr. Li Wenliang, a doctor who valiantly tried to warn his fellow Chinese citizens and the world about the scale of the outbreak, and the danger of it to humans. The Chinese state had him arrested, and forced him to sign a statement saying he was lying:

“Hailed as a national hero, Dr Li was apprehended by Wuhan police for spreading “rumours” earlier last month.

He had warned his classmates in a private WeChat message about a SARS-like virus spreading in Wuhan, the epicentre of the epidemic. He first came in contact with the virus, after treating a glaucoma patient who at the time was not aware that he had already been infected with the deadly virus.”

Dr. Wenliang later died, of course, of the Coronavirus.

China didn’t just try and silence people who spoke out, either. It actively tried to destroy proof that the virus was dangerous. This report from the Times of London, from a couple of weeks ago, should never be forgotten:

Chinese laboratories identified a mystery virus as a highly infectious new pathogen by late December last year, but they were ordered to stop tests, destroy samples and suppress the news, a Chinese media outlet has revealed.

A regional health official in Wuhan, centre of the outbreak, demanded the destruction of the lab samples that established the cause of unexplained viral pneumonia on January 1. China did not acknowledge there was human-to-human transmission until more than three weeks later.

The detailed revelations by Caixin Global, a respected independent publication, provide the clearest evidence yet of the scale of the cover-up in the crucial early weeks when the opportunity was lost to control the outbreak.

Censors have been rapidly deleting the report from the Chinese internet.

Despite China’s miserable and shameful record in allowing this outbreak to happen, suppressing news of it, and destroying valuable samples of the virus, the world remains full of foolish people who continue to believe Chinese propaganda on the issue without question.

This, for example, is what China told the World Health Organisation on January 14th:

They knew it was a lie then, but they told it anyway.

If you want to explain the slow reaction by many western Governments to the outbreak of the virus, look no further than Chinese misinformation. The Italian Government, for example, confirmed its first Coronavirus cases on January 31st, just two weeks later. Because of the lies told by China, they had no particular reason to believe that the virus could cause an epidemic. It wasn’t until it was too late that their country had time to react. That outbreak, more than any other, has imperilled Europe.

So having hidden the outbreak, risked their own citizens lives, destroyed samples, and lied about the nature of the virus, what’s the Chinese Government’s latest spin?

It’s to blame the United States.

BEIJING — China is pushing a new theory about the origins of the coronavirus: It is an American disease that might have been introduced by members of the United States Army who visited Wuhan in October.

There is not a shred of evidence to support that, but the notion received an official endorsement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose spokesman accused American officials of not coming clean about what they know about the disease.

Not content with making up an absurd story about the US army deciding, for some reason, to use biological warfare against China (which then, of course, covered it up rather than exposing it, according to this nonsense), the Chinese have been going further, trying to say that Coronavirus was in the US all along, posing as the flu. Here’s a Chinese Foreign ministry official, talking nonsense:

“Be transparent! Make public your data!”, he says. Excuse me while I vomit.

If you don’t have time to watch the video, it shows the head of the US centre for disease control admitting that some deaths from the flu might actually have been deaths from Coronavirus, but mistakenly reported. This is entirely to be expected, especially in older people, if the virus made it to the US a little while before it was detected. China, however, is asking us to believe that it is evidence of an American conspiracy.

A conspiracy to do what, though? To destroy its own economy? To kill its own people?

None of this is meant to be believed by you and me, of course. It’s purely for the consumption of poor Chinese people who are denied access to most external news sources, as a way to deflect blame from the shameful incompetence of the Chinese Communist Party.

Today, China is telling the world that it has Coronavirus under control, that cases are falling, and that things are about to return to normal.

It’s possible that they’re telling the truth, but only because there’s a first time for everything.

The Chinese state is one of the most villainous on the planet. It kills its own people. It arrests people for telling the truth. It pollutes the oceans with plastic and funds the slaughter of endangered species. It flouts every convention of human rights. It forces women to have abortions late in pregnancy against their will. It persecutes Muslims, and Christians. And now it has endangered the health of the world, and wrecked the economies of half the planet.

This is an act of villainy, and evil, that should never be forgotten. China is not a friend to the west. It is our sworn enemy.
