In 2016 27% of non-Irish households on Ireland’s social housing list came from outside the EEA and UK; by 2025 they had become 46% of non-Irish applicants. In Dublin applicants from outside the EEA and UK now constitute more than 50% of all non-Irish applicants.
My colleague Ben Scallan recently reacted to a number of claims, made by Taoiseach Micheál Martin during an interview by Michael Dorgan of Fox News, on the topic of immigration and its impact on the Irish housing market. Those claims included a statement that “I mean, you have to be a citizen, you know, in terms of getting social housing”, and “our position is basically its citizens get priority.”
