Keir Starmer has resigned from his position as UK Prime Minister and also as leader of the Labour Party – saying he will be leaving the “biggest job in the country” to spend more time on “the most important job”, being a husband and father.
“Being the best husband I can, to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” he said in an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street this morning.
He said every decision he made while in office has been about “putting the country I love first”.
Mr Starmer said he had askes Labour’s governing body to chose a new leader “before Parliament returns in September”. His announcement came after Labour’s Andy Burnham, seen as a contender to challenge Starmer for leadership, decisively won the by-election in Makerfield last week
