The latest press release from the Department of Justice this morning is about enforced deportations, with Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan saying: “Another deportation flight left Dublin last night and landed safely this morning in Georgia. There were 39 people on board who had received but had not complied with Deportation Orders.”
It’s the second such flight this year, and an indication, you might think, that the government is finally getting tough on our shambolic, reckless asylum system. A closer look at the figures suggests otherwise – as does a response to Carol Nolan TD which showed that while the State believes many who are required to leave the state do so without being escorted, in reality, “as there are no routine exit checks at Irish borders, it is not possible to accurately quantify this number.”
