German police are hunting a man described “as a member of Islamist circles in Berlin”, after a van mowed down a crowd of people at the city’s Pride festival last night (Saturday) at around 10pm, before crashing into a tree.
At least one person was killed in the attack while 17 others were injured on Saturday night, including three critically.
The suspect, named by police as Abdul B, is known to the German authorities – and was described as slim, approximately 1.90m tall and last seen wearing a black hooded jumper and white trousers.
Florian Nath, a spokesman for Berlin police, said: “The suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed.”
However, the public were warned to avoid direct contact with the fugirive, who could be armed and dangerous.
The attack comes days after new data revealed that Jihadist terrorist attacks remained the deadliest terror threat in the European Union in 2025 by a significant margin.
In its annual Terrorism Situation and Trend report published this week, Europol also revealed that Leftwing terror incidents were far more common across the bloc than Rightwing ones.
The report highlighted that Islamist extremists accounted for the vast majority of violence and arrests over the course of the year.
“Jihadist terrorism accounted for the largest share of attacks in 2025 (24), representing about half of all incidents,” Europol stated.
“Jihadist attacks were the deadliest form of terrorism in 2025, causing five fatalities and injuring 81 people”, the report said.
