The Dáil voted 79-71 in favour of removing the Triple Lock this week, at Second Stage of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2026.
A majority of TDs voted to support the Government’s attempt to remove the UN Security Council requirement from the Triple Lock governing overseas deployments of the Irish Defence Forces.
The Triple Lock only permits the deployment of more than 12 members of the Defence Forces overseas when it has been agreed by the Government, the Dáil and the UN.
The Bill would end the requirement for EU approval. It is to return to Committee Stage in November, while it is generally expected that the legislation could be in force by the end of the year.
The 79 TDs who voted Tá included Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael TDs, along with some Independents. There were no abstentions.
Aontú voted against the Bill, as did Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, the Greens, Independent Ireland and People Before Profit-Solidarity.
A number of TDs did not vote. A total of 24 TDs did not vote according to the Dáil record, including Independents, Labour TDs, Sinn Féin TDs, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael TDs and Independent Ireland TDs.
