The Labour Party leader putting – of all things – a united Ireland at the heart of her conference speech over the weekend is yet more evidence of the increasingly “green” turn in progressive politics in the Republic.
It is a shift from Labour which, while always “republican” on paper, has never been a party that consciously put Irish unity at the forefront of its offering. It brings the party more in line with Sinn Fein and other left parties, and carries on thematically from the Catherine Connolly Presidential campaign which portrayed the new President as a champion of a united Ireland.
