The best news for Roderic O’Gorman in recent days might end up being the worst possible news for his party. Not only did O’Gorman hold his seat in Dublin West in the face of an anti-Green wave that obliterated every last one of his colleagues – he also functionally ensured that there is no other candidate for the leadership.
Yes, in theory, the Greens might still elect a Senator or two (though it will be tough without the active co-operation of other left parties) but unless they want to make a Senator their leader, the bottom line is that they’re essentially stuck with Roderic O’Gorman as leader for the next five years.
