In another publication, the above headline might be read as an endorsement of the Social Democrat manifesto, released just yesterday. Here, though, it is anything but. Far from offering anything of particular note to set them apart from the other options on offer this election, they make cringe gestures in the direction of the youths while toeing the same social line as everyone else.
What do I mean about the above? Well, no sooner than they’ve said they’re going to end the culture of “gimmicks” and “giveaways”, they’re saying that they’ll introduce an annual “Culture Voucher” worth €200, “to encourage 18–24-year-olds to take part in cultural activities”. Well, they’ll end the usual gimmicks, then, and replace them with others.
