Reports in recent days that a bike shelter at Leinster House cost approximately €335,000 can be described only as ‘tragi-comic’, because if you didn’t laugh, you’d cry. Or rage, which is what many people around the country expressed in reaction to the news of the latest insane overspend on a Government Buildings installation that should have cost a fraction of its final price.
Independent Ireland leader, Michael Collins TD, was one of those in fighting form as he called the hundreds of thousands of euros spent on the bike shed – with space for 18 bikes according to The Irish Times, or 36 if you ask RTÉ – “nothing short of scandalous”.
