Two people have been shot dead in Brussels this evening, police have said, and another person is believed to be injured. The victims are Swedish, and a Euro 2024 qualifier football match was taking place in the capital between Belgium and Sweden.
Prosecutors say they are treating the shooting as terrorism – and the shooter is believed to be on the run. A video posted on social media showed a man speaking Arabic who claimed he carried out the attack.
One Belgium newspaper reported that a witness said the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the shots were fired.
Brussels has increased its terror threat to the highest level. Although some reports claim an AK-47 was used, that has not been confirmed by police.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he had “offered my sincere condolences to the Swedish PM following tonight’s harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels”.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost their loved ones. As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one.”
The second half of the Euro qualifier was called off after Swedish players told Uefa that they did not want to play the second half and the Belgium team agreed, Swedish broadcaster TV6 said.
