As the government continues to establish direct provision centres around the country, a number of activists started to camp out in Dalkey “to see if locals were willing to support calls to move refugees and asylum seekers into vacant buildings in the area.”
Driven by a belief that most of the locations earmarked to house refugees and asylum seekers are not in affluent areas, the group camped out in the Dublin suburb over two days and three nights as part of a stunt to highlight what some participants called ‘the hypocrisy of those who say refugees welcome but not in my area’.
