In 2020, shortly before the US election, then-president Donald Trump said that if Joe Biden was elected, fuel prices would “skyrocket.”
The comments were made during a campaign rally on November 3rd, 2020, with Trump bragging about low fuel prices under his administration.
“We have more oil than anybody, OK?” he said.
“It’s an incredible thing that’s happened over the last 2 years…you’re paying, what? $2 a gallon for your gasoline?”
The crowd responded with cheers.
“You know what that’s like?” Trump continued. “That’s like a tax cut. That’s bigger than a tax cut.”
“If Biden got in you’d be paying $7, $8, $9 – then they’d say get rid of your car.”
Now in 2022, fuel prices have exploded across the West due to a variety of factors, including a move towards unreliable green energy, inflation and supply chain issues due to Covid lockdowns, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Fuel prices in some US regions such as southern California are nearly at $7 a gallon already, and gasoline is the most expensive it’s been since 2008, fourteen years ago, according to AAA.
Throughout Trump’s term in office, he emphasised the importance of energy independence.
“We are ending decades of foreign energy reliance to unleash the blessings of American energy independence,” Trump previously said, adding “We are very energy independent.”
Ireland too has experienced a crippling fuel price hike, with Tánaiste Leo Varadkar saying he refuses to lower taxes on fuel until the European Union approves a move.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said that he will not move to reduce taxes on fuel until the EU agrees to act as a whole, drawing criticism from some social media users.#gripthttps://t.co/nUwIrOSFoM
