Ten EU countries, including Italy, Hungary and Poland, have sent a joint statement to the European Commission opposing plans for new climate taxes – and also demanding changes to the existing carbon emissions trading system in order to protect competitiveness.
The joint statement, seen by Reuters and others, was signed by Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia – seeks “radical revision” and is seen as a major pushback to climate policy espoused by countries such as Germany and Sweden.
