Chris Rock had made a ‘GI Jane joke’ about Pinkett-Smith, who sports a buzzcut because she has alopecia, a hair loss condition.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth,” Smith repeatedly yelled after slapping the comedian on stage.
“G.I. Jane” is a 1997 movie which starred a shaved-headed Demi Moore as a young soldier entering the armed services.
Smith’s wife looked furious at the joke, and seconds later the King Richard actor bounded onto the stage and struck Rock.
Appearing slightly dazed, Rock said, “Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me”.
Smith was moments later announced as the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor for playing Richard Williams, father and coach to tennis aces Serena and Venus Williams, in “King Richard.”
