Three Government TDs who recently lost their seats in the general election have been appointed to the Seanad by Taoiseach Simon Harris.
Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Anne Rabbitte, Fianna Fáil TD for Longford–Westmeath Joe Flaherty, and Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal Alan Farrell all lost their Dáil seats in the 2024 general election that took place just two weeks ago.
However, all three have been appointed as Seanand nominees by Taoiseach Simon Harris until the upcoming Seanad election, which is set to take place at the end of January.
These newly-appointed Senators will be used to fill the vacancies left behind by Senators Timmy Dooley, Erin McGreehan and Emer Currie, who were elected to the Dáil at the recent election.
Anne Rabbitte previously served as Junior Minister for Disabilities until losing her seat at the recent election; Joe Flaherty was a Fianna Fáil backbencher TD; and Alan Farrell was the chair of the Fine Gael parliamentary party.
“As part of an agreement between the leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, the three vacant seats have been filled until the next Seanad elections in accordance with Article 18.10.2 of the constitution,” a spokesperson for the Taoiseach said.
“Alan Farrell will replace Emer Currie and Joe Flaherty and Anne Rabbitte will replace Erin McGreehan and Timmy Dooley.”
Notably, Article 18.10.2 of the Irish constitution reads: “A member of Seanad Éireann who is proposed for membership of Dáil Éireann at a general election or a bye-election shall, on accepting nomination as a candidate, be deemed to have vacated his seat.”
Seanad appointees are members of Seanad Éireann nominated directly by the Taoiseach, who has the authority to appoint 11 of its 60 members. These appointments are often used to provide political balance, reward loyal supporters, or include individuals with specific expertise or perspectives.
