Jonathan Rothwell is the principal economist at Gallup and a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. He says that a mental heath crisis amongst young people – including soaring rates of depression and suicide – led to a major study in order to try to understand the causes of the what some medical bodies are now describing as an emergency in mental health.
The study concluded that conservative and very conservative parents – and those with more pro-marriage attitudes – are more likely to raise mentally healthy teens compared to liberal parents.
