A man in his 30s, who was arrested by Gardaí at Pearse Street as part of an investigation into a “serious assault” on two off-duty Gardaí on Dame Street over the weekend, has been charged and is set to appear before Dublin District Court this morning.
A second man, also in his thirties, who was arrested in connection with the same incident, remains in Garda custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations into the assault are ongoing.
Over the weekend, Gardaí said in a statement that around 1:30 am on Saturday, two off-duty male Gardaí had been hospitalised. One of the officers was taken to St. James’s Hospital in Dublin for medical treatment, but was subsequently discharged.
The other officer – a man in his 40s – was taken to Beaumont Hospital Dublin and remains in critical condition.
As of Saturday, Garda forensics teams had the area taped off and were doing analysis of the scene of the incident.
“An incident room led by a senior investigating officer has been established at Pearse Street Garda Station,” the Gardaí said.
“…Anyone with any information is asked to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
