Prior to the refusal by Waterford City and County Council of permission for a data centre at Kilmeaden, the large planned Tonn Nua offshore wind farm was mentioned as a future source of the centre’s energy needs.
Tonn Nua, however, is not even under construction yet and not expected to become operational until 2034 at the earliest. It is another project in which the Danish state company Ørsted is the main developer in partnership with the ESB.
