I’m writing this watching the third test flight of Elon Musk’s “Starship” super-heavy rocket, live on the internet. The ability to watch a 100,000 tonne rocket leave the earth’s atmosphere in real-time is such a marvel that we often take it for granted, as, too, I think, is Elon Musk himself. I’m no Elon fanboy, but I get the sense watching Starship that we’re watching the baby steps of the future of the human race, and that centuries from now the Starship launches will be a historic event written of in the history books. It’s a privilege to watch. I don’t think we’re nearly excited enough about it – a consequence of the fact that we live in the age of cynicism. If the rocket blows up (update, it did, upon attempting re-entry) then we can just switch the channel and shrug our shoulders as we watch a video of a cat in America juggling, or something. Not to sermonise, but sometimes it’s good just to pause and marvel at a thing. We don’t do enough of that. Anyway, to other things:
Thursday is the day that Sarah and I usually record our podcast, in the evening. We have a call most Thursday afternoons to have an initial talk about topics, which I’m due to make in an hour. This week, I know what she’s going to want to talk about – the new Dylan Mulvaney music video called “Days of Girlhood”:
