A very dear friend who is also a generally smart observer of Irish politics is fond of warning, God bless him, that a United Ireland might end up becoming the Irish version of Brexit – economically and politically disruptive, with long-lasting consequences and upheaval.
Not, you understand, that he is against it. He is, in fact, like most people of his social class and background, very much for the idea of Irish unity. He just thinks that if it’s not done properly, it has the potential to be an absolute mess. Thus, he would like some proper discussions on the idea, with all the precise details of any new constitutional arrangements hammered out before any referendum took place, so that people knew exactly what they were voting for. If we’re getting a new flag, or a new anthem, or any of that sort of stuff, he’d like it all agreed beforehand.
