In the dying days of the just concluded 2024 election, the campaigning nationalist website “The Liberal” published a story perfectly designed to go viral amongst a certain kind of online activist.
“Real fear is growing in Fine Gael in Co Meath that Helen McEntee may lose her own seat in the election”, the website blared. The tweet in question garnered 330,000 views online, with the replies and quote tweets largely reflecting sentiment from McEntee’s opponents that this supposed “fear” was evidence of an imploding Fine Gael campaign. The actual story linked to was entirely unsourced, and the evidence provided was close to zero.
