Independent TD for Laois Offaly Carol Nolan has warmly welcomed the news that Offaly firefighters have voted to accept proposals from the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) that could potentially bring an end to the long running industrial action related to their pay and conditions.
Deputy Nolan was speaking after it emerged that in a ballot of SIPTU members, 63% of the states 2000 retained firefighters voted to endorse the WRC proposals.
The Independent TD who has consistently backed the campaign of firefighters within the constituency, previously described the governmental delay in resolving the industrial action in favour of the firefighters as ‘nothing short of insanity.’:
“This is a significant moment and one that our dedicated firefighters and their union reps have fought hard to bring about,” said Deputy Nolan.
“It is time now for the next phase to begin, which is the immediate implementation of increased starting pay for new recruits and the guarantee around earnings for firefighters with more than eight years of service. We must also see immediate action on the new pay levels for station officers.”
“I will continue to be available to our firefighters and will back them all the way in getting the proposals agreed upon today enforced and fully over the line,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
