Newly released figures show that, despite claims that all asylum seekers entering the country are vetted, An Garda Síochána (AGS) made no referrals to the EU’s central asylum seeker fingerprint database, EURODAC, in 2023 for the purpose of comparing fingerprint data sets in order to prevent, detect, or investigate terrorist offences or other serious criminal offences.
The sole recorded use of the database by Irish authorities has been to confirm if asylum seekers had previously attempted to claim asylum in another European country.
