One of the key things about charity is that simply offering to do something nice is not sufficient to be a good person – you’re also supposed to actually follow through on that offer, and tangibly help the person who’s in need. That’s what makes charity…well, charity.
For example, on a small scale, if someone offered you a piece of chewing gum, and you accepted, only for them to say “Sorry, I actually don’t have any gum to give you, and never did,” you probably wouldn’t thank that person. In fact, you’d likely think of them as a bit of a jackass.
