A 23-year-old man who was charged with five counts of setting shops alight in Cork City last Sunday is to be sent for psychiatric assessment.
Samuel Nunes-Neto, who is of no fixed abode, was charged with setting fire to a TK Maxx, Superdry, Lifestyle Sports, Next and Boots in Cork City on the 25th of February last at a sitting of Cork District Court today.
Nunes-Neto made a full confession while in Garda custody which prosecuting Gardaí said was corroborated by CCTV footage from the crime scenes.
No application for bail was made by the defence.
No estimate as to the cost of the damage caused by the fire was entered in court before Judge Dorgan.
Remanding Nunes-Neto in custody, Judge Dorgan also ordered that he receive all medical care necessary.
An application for free legal aid was granted with Nunes-Neto scheduled to appear before the courts via video link on the 6th of March in order to receive directions from the DPP.
The results of the psychiatric assessment are to be presented to the court on that date.
