We have looked before at the impact of demographic change on the teaching of Irish. The evidence would appear to confirm the intuitive conclusion that the greater the number of people born outside of the country the less likely it is that they will have an interest in learning Irish.
The stark fact is that over a three-year period between 2017 and 2023 that there were almost a 100,000 new exemptions from Irish granted with the annual total in 2023/24 being almost twice that for 2017/18.
