Foclóir Mháirtín Uí Chadhain á fhoilsiú ar líne don chéad uair

Idir 1937 agus 1946, bhí an scríbhneoir Máirtín Ó Cadhain ag obair faoi scéim de chuid An Gúm ag bailiú focal agus leaganacha cainte as Gaeltacht na Gaillimhe. Le linn na tréimhse sin, chuir Ó Cadhain breis agus aon mhilliún focal d’ábhar chuig An Gúm, agus sin in ord agus in eagar faoi bhreis agus 1,000 ceannfhocal.

Anuas ar sin, chuir sé samplaí ar fáil, bunaithe ar chaint bheo muintir na háite, mar léiriú ar bhrí agus ar úsáid focal. Tugann na blúiríní beaga seo léargas dúinn ar ghnáthshaol na Gaeltachta trí shúile an mhórúdair, ar a bhfuil cáil ar a chuid úrscéalta agus gearrscéalta faoin saol i nGaeltacht Chonamara.

Tá foireann Fhoclóir Stairiuil na Gaeilge, in Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann, ag obair ar théacs iomlán Fhoclóir Uí Chadhain a chur in eagar agus a fhoilsiú ar líne le roinnt blianta anuas. Beidh an foclóir ar fáil ag focloiruichadhain.ria.ie ar an 18 Meitheamh 2021. Beidh sé ar fáil saor in aisce, agus is acmhainn thábhachtach é do seanchaithe, múinteoirí, scoláirí, taighdeoirí agus pobal na Gaeilge i gcoitinne.

Ag ócáid speisialta ar líne inniu, seolfaidh Príomh-Aoire an Rialtais agus Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta agus an Spóirt, Jack Chambers TD, Foclóir Mháirtín Uí Chadhain.

Ag labhairt dhó inniu, dúirt an tAire Stáit: “Tá saothar Mhairtín Uí Chadhain aitheanta mar chuid den litríocht Gaeilge is fearr sa 20ú aois. Tá a leabhar Cré na Cille ar cheann de na leabhair is tábhachtaí a scríobhadh sa teanga agus tá cáil air ar fud an domhain de bharr caighdeáin na scríbhneoireachta. Beidh an foclóir nua seo mar áis úsáideach do mhúinteoirí, scoláirí, scríbhneoirí agus do phobal na Gaeilge. Tugann an foclóir léargas dúinn ar Ghaeilge shaibhir na Gaillimhe agus ar shaol na Gaeltachta mar a bhí ag an am. Tá sé thar a bheith tábhachtach go dtarbharfaí tacaíocht don tionscnamh seo le go mbeidh an t-ábhar seo ar fáil do na glúine a thiocfaidh inár ndiaidh.  Is tráthúil chomh maith é go bhfuil an chuid seo d’oidhreacht liteartha Uí Chadhain á foilsiú i mbliana agus muid ag comóradh a bháis caoga bliain ó shin.”

Tá an foclóir á fhoilsiú mar chuid den tionscadal taighde Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge. Cuireann an Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán maoiniú ar fáil don Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann, chun foclóir stairiúil a chruthú, a thabharfaidh léargas cuimsitheach ar bhrí agus úsáid na Gaeilge le linn na tréimhse c.1600-2000. Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s Dictionary to be Published Online for the First Time

The renowned writer collected over 500,000 words

Between 1937 and 1946, the writer Máirtín Ó Cadhain worked under a scheme by An Gúm to collect words and expressions from the Galway Gaeltacht. During that period, Ó Cadhain sent over one million words worth of material to An Gúm, in order, under more than 1,000 headwords.

In addition, he provided examples, based on the lively speech of the locals, as an illustration of the meaning and use of words. These little fragments give us an insight into the ordinary life of the Gaeltacht through the eyes of the great author, who is known for his novels and short stories about life in the Connemara Gaeltacht.

The staff of Foclóir Stairiuil na Gaeilge, in the Royal Irish Academy, have been working to edit and publish the full text of Foclóir Uí Chadhain online for a number of years. The website will be available at focloiruichadhain.ria.ie on the 18th of June 2021. It will be available free of charge, and is an important resource for storytellers, teachers, scholars, researchers and the Irish language community in general.

At a special online event today, the Government’s Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers TD, will launch Foclóir Mháirtín Uí Chadhain.

Speaking today, the Minister of State says: “Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s work is recognised amongst the best Irish language literature of the 20th century. His book Cré na Cille is one of the most important books written in the language and is world-renowned for its standard of writing. This new dictionary will be a useful resource for teachers, students, writers and the Irish language community. The dictionary gives us an insight into the rich Irish language of Galway and the life of the Gaeltacht as it was at the time. It is extremely important to support this initiative in making this material available to future generations. It is also timely that this part of Ó Cadhain’s literary legacy is being published this year as we commemorate his death fifty years ago.”

The dictionary is being published as part of the Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge research project. The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media provides funding to the Royal Irish Academy to create a historical dictionary which will provide a comprehensive overview of the meaning and use of the Irish language during the period c.1600-2000.
