European Union member states and institutions paid over €710 billion in foreign aid in total over a decade, Gript can reveal.
The figures were released to Gript by Eurostat, and reveal that between 2013 and 2023, around €710,224,344,043 was paid in Overseas Development Aid – financial support from the EU and its member states to reduce poverty, promote development, and address challenges in developing countries through grants, loans, and humanitarian relief.
Ireland alone gave €7.2 billion in total during the same period.
Over the past decade, the top 3 member states that were the biggest spenders on foreign aid were Germany (which gave over €195 billion), France (at €93 billion), and Sweden (at €46 billion).
Meanwhile, the least was given by Cyprus (at €52 million), Latvia (at €91 million) and Malta (at €216 million).
Looking to European institutions, the European Commission gave over €172 billion, while the European Investment Bank gave €38 billion.
Meanwhile, as far as recipient countries go, the top 3 beneficiaries of European aid during that period were Ukraine (€38.4 billion), Turkey (€31.9 billion), and Morocco (€12.4 billion).
Notably, China was given €7.91 billion in foreign aid by the EU during the past decade.
